This ceramic ocarina is easy to learn to play for beginners, but is also sophisticated and proper sounding for a seasoned professional.

The Minor Pentatonic scale uses just five notes.  It leaves out a couple of the more edgy notes from the major scale.  It has a very balanced feeling, peaceful.  It is the same scale used on the Native American flute, and also the Japanese Shakuhachi flute.  It's first interval is a minor third, which is like hanging out in the cool shade rather than in the bright sunshine.  The scale has an  association with nature, meditation, and ease.  In fact it is a very easy going scale, because every note is harmonious with every other note.  So some would describe it as having no "wrong" notes, which sounds judgmental to those of us who indulge  in unusual micro tunings, but that's how it goes.

You open the holes in a linear fashion, (in a row), one after the other, cumulatively from right to left.    You don't require tablature for this scale, because it is used for improvisation, for playing your "heart song", like a love song from your soul.  Because there is less thought required, more focus can be brought to the primary function of breath, feeling, connection, and spontaneity.

For a little spice, to achieve other notes outside the five note scale, it is possible by "crossfingering", or closing a hole to the right of the still open holes, a "drop note".   Using this technique, you can achieve many more notes on a Minor Pentatonic ocarina.
